Richard Schmack was born in 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised there and in Berwyn, Illinois after 1968. An honor student at Morton West High School, in Berwyn, where he earned a varsity letter as a wrestler, he graduated in 1974. He went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, in 1977 with majors in both Political Science and History. In 1980 he received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
Upon graduation from law school in 1980, Richard was admitted to the Illinois Bar that same year and the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, in 1984. He is also a member of the U.S. District Court Trial Bar. Richard has made DeKalb County his home since 1985. He, his wife, Jackie, who is his office manager, and their sons, Eric and Ben, recent graduates of Northern Illinois University, all reside in Sycamore.
In addition to the American Bar Association and Illinois State Bar Association, Richard maintains membership in the DeKalb County Bar Association, of which he has served as President, the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, the ISBA’s Criminal Law and Real Estate Sections, and the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.
Prior to opening his private practice in 1989, Richard served as an Assistant State’s Attorney under DeKalb County State’s Attorney Philip L. DiMarzio, working on felony, misdemeanor and traffic prosecutions, as well as child support enforcement and mental health cases. In his capacity as the civil assistant, Richard represented DeKalb County in lawsuits in Federal and State courts, served as legal advisor to all departments of County government, and represented the County’s Zoning Board of Appeals, gaining valuable knowledge of the County’s zoning ordinances and regulations.
